Pasifika Love Storie: DeeJay and Neens

This love story is one that I’m excited for y’all to read! Please meet DeeJay and Uini aka Neens. They have been together for 10+ years and here is there their story:

What is Your Love Story?

I’m Samoan and my wife is Tongan. Tokouso to the fullest! Been around the same crowd but never ran into each other until college. We met thru FB. Got together September 2010, married June 2014 and 3kids later we’re still growing together. Our love has been on a rollercoaster from the start. Trust issues, family issues, postpartum, and more. But I wouldn’t have done it with anyone else.

Do you think the media represents Pasifika love stories well?

I feel like media is just NOW reaching our people. No, I think we could elaborate more and show the media how beautiful our love is.

Why do you think Pasifika love stories matter?

All love stories matter. The next couple or single person can take notes of what worked for others to use in their own story. Ours just haven’t been fully heard yet.

Who do you look up to as role models of Pasifika love?

My great grandparents. They brought their family up from nothing and became a staple in the Samoan community in Pomona, CA. They had many disagreements and viewpoints but they stayed strong together. Moving from Samoa to Hawaii, then to Pomona, they never gave up on each other.

Did your parents expect you to marry outside or inside the culture?

Inside. I love Polynesian women and everyone knew I’d end up marrying one

How did you know your significant other was the one?

Came thru patience. Thru pain, bullshit, family bullshit, kids, and more. The sacrifices she’s made and the more she withstood my past and my past trauma, showed me she was the one.

What advice would you give Pasifika people who are single?

Trust me, work on you. Make you the best you and the right one will match your energy.

Is there anything else you would like to share with our Pasifika community about love?

Don’t let most of the media fool you. Love is alive. You just have to tune your energy in to its channel.

How amazing was that!? Thank you so much for sharing your story with us. It’s a beautiful one!
